John Gillett-William P. Whittle papers, 1835-1869.

Correspondence, tax receipts, legal documents and copybook. The majority of the collection concerns the partnership of Gillett, Smith Tuttle of Fair Haven, Connecticut, and Horace Hotchkiss of New York, who sold the town of Commerce to the Mormons who renamed it Nauvoo. Letters concern real estate dealings and property taxes. Whittle's student copybook and genealogy material on the Gillett, Whittle, Parke and Hickcox families is included.

John Gillett (1796-1847), of Cornland, Logan County, Illinois was a farmer and real estate speculator. His son-in-law William P.
